A psychiatrist is a medical doctor (MD or DO) who specializes in diagnosing and treating mental health conditions. After medical school, psychiatrists complete residency training in psychiatry and are licensed to prescribe medications, evaluate medical causes of psychiatric symptoms, and provide a range of treatments including psychotherapy and medication management.
A psychologist typically holds a doctoral degree in psychology (PhD or PsyD) and specializes in psychological testing, therapy, and behavioral interventions. Psychologists are highly trained in psychotherapy and assessment but generally do not prescribe medications in most states.
Both psychiatrists and psychologists play important roles in mental health care, and many patients benefit from collaborative treatment involving both therapy and medical management.

Yes. Lakeside Psychiatry may prescribe controlled substances when clinically appropriate and medically indicated. Dr. Prasad follows all applicable federal and Washington State regulations, including careful psychiatric evaluation, review of medical history, ongoing monitoring, and safe prescribing practices.
-
Item descriptionAt Lakeside Psychiatry, prescription refills are managed carefully to ensure both safety and continuity of care. For non-controlled medications, refills can often be requested through the patient portal or by contacting our office, and they are typically reviewed and processed within 1–2 business days.
For controlled substances, refills require regular follow-up appointments in accordance with federal and state regulations and clinical best practices. These medications cannot be refilled early or without appropriate evaluation. Dr. Prasad monitors these prescriptions closely, and patients are typically seen at scheduled intervals to assess effectiveness, side effects, and ongoing need.
We encourage patients to request refills in advance to avoid gaps in treatment, especially for time-sensitive medications.
-
For your first appointment at Lakeside Psychiatry, please bring a valid photo ID, your insurance card (if applicable), and a list of your current medications, including doses and frequency. It is also helpful to bring any relevant prior psychiatric or medical records, past treatment history, and the names of previous providers if you have them.
If you have had prior psychological testing, hospitalizations, or recent lab work, those documents can also be useful in helping us understand your history comprehensively. You may also want to write down a brief list of your current symptoms, concerns, and treatment goals to make the most of your visit.
Arriving prepared helps us provide a thorough and efficient initial evaluation tailored to your needs.
